Courses

At Bachelor level, the subprogramme organizes the Algorithms for Bioinformatics -course, targeted for those aiming at specializing to algorithmic bioinformatics at Master's level. An alternative to this as the first course in bioinformatics is Modelling and Analysis in Bioinformatics.

The two compulsory courses, Design and Analysis of Algorithms and Introduction to Machine Learning, are organized by the subprogramme of algorithms, data analytics, and machine learning.

The semi-compulsory course options Biological Sequence Analysis and Algorithms in Molecular Biology with the corresponding projects form the core teaching of the subprogramme, leading to knowledge suitable for selecting a Master's thesis topic under the subprogramme.

Other advanced studies in bioinformatics can be any advanced courses offered by the subprogramme itself and suitable courses offered by the collaborating subprogrammes biometry and bioinformatics, biomathematics, and life science technologies. Also other courses can be considered case-by-case to this category based on approved personal study plan (FM-HOPS). After the required 24 cr of optional core advanced studies in bioinformatics are full, any advanced courses in computer science are accepted to this category; especially courses on algorithms, machine learning, and distributed computation are recommended in order to strenghten the graduate profile as algorithmic bioinformatician.

The subprogramme helps the students to find an Advanced Internship in Bioinformatics, 1-3 cr, continuing the tradition started at MBI programme. The aim is that the students at the programme find also their Master's thesis topics through the internships.
