Modeling LTE power consumption
Smartphones consume a lot of energy when transmitting or receiving data via wireless network interfaces. One way to realize the effect of wireless communication is measuring the power consumption and the other way is modeling the power consumption. In order to model the power consumption we need to understand the power consumption characteristics through measurements. Yu Xiao et al. modeled the power consumption of the Wi-Fi interface [1]. The basic power consumption of Wi-Fi, HSPA and LTE is reported in [2]. It is found that the relation between data rate and power consumption is linear and the data rate is controlled by the server or sender. The purpose of this work is understand the power consumption of smartphones when using LTE networks at different network conditions through measurements and analysis. This would allow to understand the power consumption if the data rate is controlled by the network. Then model the energy consumption of LTE.
