Scientific Writing for MSc in Computer Science : Weekly schedule

The students are divided into workgroups of 4-6+ members. The groups will meet at least once a week throughout the priod 1. Each student is, of course, expected to carry out his or her own work independently even when there are no meetings.

It is compulsory to attend the first lecture and the first group meeting!

The following exercises (at least) will be completed by every group member:

Bibliography:

Searching for scientific articles and forming the first draft for bibliogrphy of the work. The layout of the arcile and its bibliograhy requrements must be followed from the beginning. An automatic tool bibtex or refwors must be used to maintain the collected metadata.

Defining the structure:

Based on the collected material you must define your article structure before actually writing the text. The structure will have (sub)setioin headers, keywords for each paragraph and key articles to be cited in each section.

Article

The aim of the article is to present the subject matter in depth and from various viewpoints. Special attention should be paid to analysing the subject in a manner typical for a thesis or scientific article and to how the contents are structured. The article should be 15 pages long in the given form.

The subjects for the weekly exercises will be linked together as far as possible; a general overview, a more detailed focusing on a specific sector, diversifying the presentation for the final article.

Reviewing draft articles
Practise the very important review process used in peer-reviewed journals ad conferences. You will read two to three drafts, comment and give improvement ideas to the author. At the same time you will learn to edit existing text and will get feedback from external readers to your own text.
