Distributed Systems : Exercise 6
1.-5. Thinking like an examiner. (Mark 1 "exercise point" per question.)
Study the course learning objective matrix at
https://www.cs.helsinki.fi/en/courses/582417/matrix (or the Finnish version).
A) Come up with 5 exam questions (do not copy earlier exercises + answers,
obviously - similarity is ok as long as you're actually thinking about it
yourself) that represent what you consider important things in the course based
on the learning objectives.
The questions should measure the student's understanding, capability to apply
knowledge, and at the highest level their critical thinking - avoid relying on
the student's ability to uncritically repeat / memorize material, unless it is
important enough to warrant remembering.
You are welcome to use the material learned in slide chapters 6 and 7 as case
material to make your questions more concrete.
Your questions should be distributed so that at least one question covers each
line in the learning matrix.
* Goals and challenges of distribution
* Structure of a distributed system,
* Coordination of system and communications + Distributed Decision making,
* Management of replicas, and
* Fault tolerance methods.
Note that "Approaches the learning objectives" means you should know this stuff
to pass the course, and "Reaches the learning objectives" means if you know all
this, you get a 5/5 for the course.
B) Prepare a model answer or grading instructions for each of your
questions. Does your grading match the measurement goals ("understanding, not
memorizing")?
(You may take into consideration that the exam time is 2,5 hours in practice,
but more time-wise challenging questions are ok too, because you're doing this
task to help your learning, not to help us in making the actual exam. If you
make a really fun question, though, do send it to us, we may put it to use in
e.g. exercises next year.)
An example partial solution will be revealed in Wednesday 12.12. 16.30-20 in
B123. ;) (4 questions seems to be the typical number.)
6. (Bonus point.) Fill in the course feedback form
https://ilmo.cs.helsinki.fi/kurssit/servlet/Valinta?kieli=en (you can fill it in
in Finnish as well).
You can skip the feedback questions about the exam if you do this before the
exam, OR not mark it now but instead note clearly that you've filled it when you
return homework 4, and that you should get this bonus exercise credit then.
