Many traditional software development organizations are nowadays facing new challenges in turbulent business and technology environment. Moreover, the fixed boundaries between software producers and their customers/markets are opening up and developing towards networked organizations, intensive customer/user collaboration, and business ecosystems.
On the other hand, new internal ways of working based on for instance social media tools and Cloud services could enable even radical rethinking of the foundations of future software development organizations. Some such new organizational models are emerging in game studios, for instance.
The overall purpose of this thesis category is to explore and compare such elements for improving current typical software organizations on the one hand, and to analyze even radically new organizational forms on the other hand (e.g., for start-up companies). Some specific research questions are then as follows:
- Which organizational designs (e.g., matrix organization) are most suitable for different software product development types?
- How should software development and the related business processes be integrated and governed?
- How could software developers (knowledge workers) collaborate both internally within the organization and externally with their customers for instance with social media tools?
- What are the most effective leadership models in such organizations?
