The minor subject of method sciences consists of certain courses in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Students with computer science as their major subject can only incorporate courses in mathematics and statistics in their minor-subject module in method sciences.

It has been possible to take a minor-subject module in method sciences since autumn 2004. The module requirements for computer science majors are detailed in the degree requirements in the study guide.

The courses in mathematics and statistics included in the module (the ‘course basket’) are defined in the Study Guide under Minor module in method sciences. You can also take minor-subject modules in both mathematics and statistics.

The major-subject department decides whether a minor module in method sciences can be incorporated in its students’ degrees. This means that our department can only comment on its majoring students'  degree programme. Students majoring in other subjects have to agree on the contents of the module with their own major-subject department.

Students majoring in computer science have to take the following into consideration in relation to the minor module in method sciences:

• For the degree requirements of 2005, the minor subject of method sciences is set to the extended basic module (at least 30 credits, no upper limit), and the basic and intermediate module (at least 60 credits).
• For the degree requirements of 2008, the minor subject of method sciences is set to the basic module (at least 25 credits, no upper limit), and the intermediate module (at least 35 credits).
• The basic module of method sciences must include at least 10 credits of mathematics and at least 10 credits of statistics courses. This means that you cannot include courses in computer science in the module.
• In special cases, it is possible to take the minor module in method sciences in accordance with a personal study plan instead of how it is outlined in the study guide. The study plan and transcript of credits so far have to be presented to the department’s liaison, Heikki Lokki. The study plan must include the planned contents of the method-science module according to course, as well as a scheduled personal study plan that encompasses the whole degree.

  Examples of exceptions

  • transferring to method sciences with credits already gained in mathematics and statistics,
  • incorporating courses that do not belong in the course basket (but have been completed at the University of Helsinki) into the module,
  • incorporating credits from other departments or other universities into the module.

For credits gained elsewhere, you need to present sufficient documentation of the contents of the course. The general rule is that credits gained elsewhere must replace one of the courses in the course basket for method sciences.
