Kurssilla tutustutaan tiedon esitysmuotoihin ja tiedon hakuun suurista tietomääristä. Erityisenä painopisteenä ovat relaatiotietokannat, joiden kohdalla perehdytään toisaalta teoreettiseen perustaan ja toisaalta tietokannan käytännön käsittelyyn SQL-kielen avulla. Kurssilla opitaan myös perustiedot relaatiotietokantojen suunnittelusta.

General

This course is an introduction to database concepts, data modeling, design and  use of databases. It is a self-study course with only one lecture session (in Finnish). There are scheduled exercises and a small project work that is planed to be done as a group work (it may also be carried out as an indivuidual project).  The students that have registered for an exercise group are dividen into smaller groups of  4-6 students for the project work. Project groups that use English as their working language are arranged when needed. Exercise group sessions are used mainly for the project work.  The use of a database may be  exercised in an automated training environment. The solutions for  the exercise tasks will be published after the dedline of each group of tasks

As a prerequisite the students should manage the basic concepts of  the mathematical set theory and the basics of programming.
