Annual holiday entitlements are based on the act on annual holidays and the collective labour agreement for universities.

Those included in the annual workload (1600 hrs) system
The contract for annual holidays does not apply to teaching and research staff working according to the 1600-hour plan. This means that they do not gain days off, so they do not need to notify the administration about their holidays, but they do receive the holiday bonus along with their regular salary in July.
Annual holiday
Other staff and research and teaching assistants have the right to annual holidays. The annual holiday is paid leave from work. Annual holiday entitlements are based on the act on annual holidays and the collective labour agreement for universities. Employees should always agree on their annual holidays with their superior, and the department administration (Inka Kujala D237, Heidi Kinnunen D238) should be notified about when the holiday will be taken. Days off and weeks off
Only weekdays are counted as days off, and Saturdays, Sundays, bank holidays, Christmas eve, Midsummer eve, Independence Day, or May Day (1st May) do not count as weekdays. This means that every week of holidays spends 5 entitlement days.
Holiday entitlement
The holiday entitlement year is the period 1 April - 31 March, and a holiday year is the calendar year, during which the entitlement year ends. A full holiday entitlement month requires 14 working days.
Holiday bonus
The holiday bonus is calculated according to a certain percentage of the salary of the month before payment of the bonus, i.e. June, multiplied by the number of full entitlement months (4%, 5% or 6%).
Example: (3000 x 5%) x 12 = 1800
Length of annual holiday
Employees who have worked less than one consecutive year (with a maximum of 30 days off) at UH or another university by the end of a holiday entitlement year are entitled to holidays according to the following table (I):

Employees who have worked at UH, another Finnish university, a university-level research institute, or a university hospital at least one year or 12 holiday entitlement months by the end of the holiday entitlement year are entitled to holidays according to the following table (II):

Holiday season
The general rule is that 20 consecutive days (or at least 10 days) of holiday should be taken during the holiday season 1 June – 30 September. Holiday entitlements must be used by the end of May the following year.
Employees must always agree on their holidays with their superior, and the department administration must be notified about days off with the absence notification form.
Annual holiday for part-time employees
Part-time employees (contract over 35/h month) earn annual holidays in the same way as fulltime employees, in accordance with the tables above.
As a general rule, holidays are always granted to part-time employees as full weeks off, which uses up 5 days off. One week of holidays = 5 days, one day of holidays = 1 day off.
Postponing holidays
It is possible to make a contract to save some days off from your annual holiday if your entitlement exceeds 15 days.
If you have 7 holiday entitlement months (table II), for example, and 19 days, you can postpone 4 days. You must make the contract to postpone some days before your holiday plans are confirmed in May, and the postponed days must be taken within five years of the end of the holiday year in which you have saved your days off.
